The pain I felt in seeing someone affected by polio was a driving force for me...This is all because of Rotary, and it all began with Youth Exchange.”Tuesday, June 19, 2007William H. Gates, Sr.Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation“I hope you learn to look beyond tomorrow, next week, and next year. I hope you ask yourself what you can do over the 50 years of your working lives to make the problems that plague our world a little bit better...My son, the other Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda, started their foundation because they believe what you believe: that every life has equal value—that every person, no matter where he or she lives, deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life. They also know they’ve been extremely fortunate, and they feel a responsibility to share that good fortune.”Wednesday, June 20, 2007Hyrum W. SmithRotarian, author, Co-Founder of Franklin Covey and creator of the Franklin PlannerSo the message I would ask you to consider is really wrapped up in the title of this book: Pain is Inevitable, Misery is Optional. The fact is we are not going to get through [life] without pain. I have come to feel that one of the major reasons for being here is to come to deal with and learn from pain. How we choose to deal with it is perhaps the ultimate measure of who we are, and in my life’s experiences, I am frequently reminded of my father’s words before he died: ‘The sorrows will far outnumber the joys but the joys will far outweigh the sorrows.’”Already, more than 11,000 Rotarians and guests have registered to attend the convention, and more than HALF of the rooms set aside for Rotarians have been booked. Please help spread information about the convention by forwarding these messages to your friends, family and fellow Rotarians who might be interested in this life-changing humanitarian event!
