Rotary Basics And Guiding Principles
Rotary Basics And Guiding Principles
The first Rotary meeting was held on February 23, 1905 by Chicago attorney, Paul Harris. The organization is now known as Rotary International (RI). RI is the world's oldest service club organization with more that 1.2 million members in 32,000 clubs in 168 countries. Rotarians are members of Rotary Clubs and Clubs are grouped into 529 districts led by a district governor. The Rotary Club of East Honolulu (Club 11) was chartered on May 25, 1959 and we are in District 5000.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise by: 1) developing acquaintances as an opportunity for service, 2) having high ethical standards in business and professions and recognizing the worthiness of all useful occupations, 3) applying the ideal of service in our personal, business and community life, and 4) advancing international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Based on the Object of Rotary, the four Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activities are based. The Avenues are:
  • Club Service - focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring effective functioning of the Club
  • Vocational Service - encourages serving others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards
  • Community Service - covers projects and activities to improve life the community
  • International Service - encompasses actions to expand Rotary's humanitarian reach around the globe and promote world understanding and peace.
The FOUR-WAY TEST, created in 1932, is followed by Rotarian worldwide in their business and personal lives:

Of the things we think, say or do

First: Is it the TRUTH?
Second: Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Third: Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Fourth: Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
