PALOLO SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
The School Supply Drive for Palolo Elementary School was an overwhelming success. However, this was only made possible with the active participation of the members. Trisha Tsubaki did an outstanding job of publicizing the event with perfectly timed announcements in the newspapers (Saturday morning Advertiser) and Sunday morning radio spots. People responded to them in a magnificent fashion and flooded the booth at Kahala Mall with "mountains" of school supplies. Linda Char jumped in without being asked, taking care of sign-up sheets and also volunteering a shift at the booth. Faye Ross not only provided invaluable experience having chaired this project last year, she made the flyers and kept the volunteers fed and watered. Ian Ross designed and made the signs. Other hard working volunteers included (in no particular order): Jim Morris, Tia Murray, Elsie Choy, Linda Char, Ruth Chang, Lisa Foster, Laura Steelquist, John Steelquist, Pearl Low, Kim Delmore, Terence Yeh, Pat Yee, Reid Saito, Judy Saranchock. Last but not least, community service director Al Takata did a magnificent job chairing this project. With a team like this, success was a slam dunk for the Rotary Club of East Honolulu.

The total collected included 23 cartons of school supplies (each carton averaging 4 cubic feet), or the equivalent of two 8 foot long banquet tables with supplies stacked about 2 feet high. The club also collected 78 pairs of rubber slippers and 17 backpacks, plus $599 in cash (which the school will use to purchase T-shirts so that every child can have at least one shirt to wear to school).
