PALOLO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Thanks to the efforts of many individuals and organizations including the Rotary Club of East Honolulu, Palolo Elementary School made its AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) goal for the year 2006-07 and is no longer in restructuring status. To celebrate this achievement and in appreciation of the administration, teachers, staff, students, and volunteers, the school staff is inviting everyone to join them for cake and ice cream on the following date and time:

Friday, September 7, 2007
in the Palolo Elementary School cafeteria
Starting at 1:30 PM

[Above Photo] During the Aug. 4th and 5th school supply drive at Kahala Mall, East Honolulu charter member Harry Arakaki and his wife stopped by the booth to say hello. President Jim Morris and past president Laura Steelquist invited them to come to one of our meetings. It is always nice to see old Rotarians come out of the woodwork.

NEW MEMBER UPDATE
Gemma Williams was recently inducted into the club. Gemma is counselor and Associate Professor at KCC, with a Rotary vocational classification of “Higher Education – Counseling”. She was a Rotary University Facultee Grantee from July – September 2001 working in South Africa.

UPCOMING SPEAKER PROFILE
Lowell Kalapa is the President of the Tax Foundation of Hawaii, a private non-profit educational organization dedicated to informing the public (more specifically, the taxpayer) about the finances of our state and local government. The Foundation looks at how government raises the money it spends --- be it taxes, user fees, or borrowing money through the use of debt. The Foundation attempts to unravel the mystery of the state budget with an annual review of legislative actions appropriating various funds for state programs and projects. While the bulk of its attention is garnered by state actions (as it is at that level that the overwhelming array of services are provided by government in Hawaii), the Foundation also keeps a watchful eye on county governments as they annually set real property tax rates in order to fund their respective budgets. The Foundation is supported entirely by private contributions and is not affiliated with any state or government agency.
