ROTARY MINUTE by John Steelquist
The purpose of the Rotary Minute is to share a Rotary fact, highlight, or historical anecdote. Over time, it is hoped the members will appreciate the many facets, rich history, organizational structure, and benefits of Rotary.
Rotary Friendship Exchange
Find exchange partners with the Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) Matching Board. Friendship Exchange is Rotary’s international exchange program for Rotarians and their families. Participants experience other cultures and build friendships by staying in the homes of Rotary club members in another country. This program advances international understanding and peace through personal contact across borders while developing interclub relationships that lead to fellowship and service projects. There are 3 types of Friendship Exchanges: (1) Visitor program: Individual Rotarians, who may be accompanied by family members, spend a few days in a Rotarian’s home abroad, (2) Team program: Rotarian couples (typically four to six) visit several communities in a host district for up to one month, and (3) Univocational: Rotarians of the same occupation observe how their job is done in other
countries. Only Rotarians and their immediate families are eligible for the visitor program, and participation in the team program is limited to Rotarians and their spouses. District governors from participating districts appoint a district Friendship Exchange chair, which is responsible for coordinating exchanges through a list of chairs from around the world. E-mail friendshipexchange@rotary.org to identify your district chair. Download the Rotary Friendship Exchange Handbook for more information
NEW MEMBER: CHUCK SERVEY
East Honolulu Rotary welcomes its newest member Charles (Chuck) Servey III, under the vocational classification “Community and Social Service”. Chuck is the new Executive Director of The Arc on Diamond Head Road (the position formerly held by Colleen Kojima). Chuck’s sponsor is Jim Morris. Since Chuck was a Rotarian before, congratulations go out to Chuck for re-joining the family of Rotary!
Oahu District Assembly
April 19, 2008 (Saturday)
The next Oahu District Assembly is on Saturday 4/19 at Kamehameha Middle School. Registration begins at 8:00 AM, with the call to order at 8:30 AM. This is an excellent opportunity for all Rotarians (and especially new Rotarians and those serving on next year’s Board) to learn more about Rotary, meet other clubs, and dive into specific areas of interest. There will be numerous break-out sessions covering many different areas such as membership, Rotary Foundation, service projects, club administration, and sessions specifically for club Secretaries and Treasurers. For those who attend, the cost of lunch is paid for by East Honolulu Rotary.
2008 District Conference Subsidy
Any member who brings a guest to a meeting or participates in an upcoming club project will receive a $135 subsidy to attend the 2008 District Conference at the beautiful Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, from May 23 - 26. The hotel just completed a $60 million renovation, so don’t miss an opportunity to join in Rotary fellowship, celebrate Rotary successes, and have an all around good time. The $135 subsidy is to encourage all members to attend. It is not too late to register online at www.rotaryd5000.org.
