Our Mission is to reduce homelessness by providing resources and choices to Hawaii's families
Founded in January 1989 by Ivy Olson, Angel Network Charities, Inc. (ANC) is a private, non-profit organization serving Oahu's homeless and at-risk families. Originally designated by the State as Hawaii Kai's Homeless Village, ANC replaced the village concept with a scattered site plan that did not stigmatize residents. At the time ANC partnered with various churches, businesses, professionals, and other agencies to insure that the families gained the skills and education needed to become and remain self-sufficient. Many of these families continue to be self-supporting to this day.
ANC began as a grassroots, all-volunteer organization supported by Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church in Aina Haina. As it grew from caring for a few families to over 40, the need for professional leadership became clear. Today, ANC has a small paid staff, volunteers, and a seven member Board of Directors. In 2002, we stopped our transitional housing program mainly due to lack of funding but continue to provied a vast array of services to assist the homelessand at-risk families.
Families that we assist at ANC are required to work with a case manager to develop and pursue a self-sufficiency plan, avoid drugs and alcohol, and give back to ANC and the community through volunteer services. Particiants are also encouraged to pursue their spiritual development within a religious community of their choice.
Though partnerships with island churches, the business community, professional, and social service agencies ANC has serviced hundreds of families in our programs. This success was already noted as early as 1991 when Ivy's ANC was named Point of Light for the Nation by President Bush and received the U.S. Voluntary Service Award in 1993 from President Clinton.
In addition to grants and private donations, ANC is involved in a variety of annual fund raising activities. We also operate a successful Garage Sale Thrift Shop and Food Bank at our Aina Haina location.
