PALOLO SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENT
Congratulations to those Rotarians who helped with the Palolo Elementary School efforts to meet the State of Hawaii Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) standards.  It is a huge accomplishment and testament to how hard the school has been working these last years.  Under the leadership of immediate past president Naomi Masuno, East Honolulu Rotarians put together a final "cram" study session for the Palolo students. Palolo was one of seven schools to be removed from sanctions in 2007 (Palolo was previously in “Restructuring” status).

According to current AYP thresholds, 44% of a school’s students must be proficient in reading and 28% in math on the Hawaii State Assessment, plus other indicators. The goals apply to schools as a whole, as well as to subgroups defined by ethnicity, poverty levels, English proficiency, and special education needs. If even one subgroup is deficient, the entire school does not meet AYP.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE – AUG. 4th and 5th
The Palolo school supply drive will be held on Saturday 8/4 and Sunday 8/5 at Kahala Mall. The purpose of the drive is to raise funds and supplies for Palolo Elementary. See the back of this bulletin for details. If you can, please donate school supplies and rubber slippers (sizes 9-13). Many of the students desperately need footwear in addition to pencils, crayons, glue, notebooks, etc.

EAST HONOLULU ROTARY CLUB HISTORY
The Rotary Club of East Honolulu was chartered on May 29, 1959 with 25 members. Meetings were originally held at the old M’s Ranch House in Aina Haina and lunch consisted of soup and sandwhiches. It didn’t take long, though, for Chef Al Schmidt to prepare hot meals and salad for the members. Charter member Kal Yee recalls going through “hours and hours” of Rotary information in the evenings at the First Hawaiian Bank meeting room of fellow member Bob Moranha. Today, the Rotary Club of East Honolulu consists of 50+ members who are business, professional, educational, and community leaders. After having moved around from various locations, meetings are now held at Waialae Country Club.
